Changing anything in finance demands bold thinking that breaks free from conventional assumptions. Legal and Compliance are agents of that transformation too: we use our own judgment to determine whether the ideas coming up from the business will truly make people's lives better, and once we believe they will, we think through every angle of how to make them real. We engage not with the surface of regulation but with the interests it is meant to protect, rigorously analyze how new situations differ from existing ones, and then draw new lines of benefit and responsibility that never compromise those protected interests. We meet the boldness of the business head-on, design it with integrity, and see its operation through to the end. That is the work of our two teams, Legal and Compliance.

Meet the Legal team

What We Do

The team is divided into Legal and Compliance. Legal handles the full breadth of legal work, centered on examining business schemes, drafting and reviewing terms of service and partnership agreements, conducting external negotiations, and recovering receivables through judicial proceedings. Compliance builds and operates our regulatory compliance framework; monitors for anti-money laundering, ties to anti-social forces, and the like; handles audits and engagement with the authorities; and goes further to identify business risks and to design and execute both preventive measures and steps to minimize damage when risks materialize.

Why We Exist

Finance is the infrastructure of the economy, an industry that can determine whether our users' businesses survive. We can be bold, but never irresponsible or reckless. Only by continuing to take on challenges in a sound, principled way do we earn cumulative trust from everyone involved, allowing the business to grow sustainably as one that supports an ever-larger number of users. Our reason for being is to design, operate, and continuously update the mechanisms that make such ongoing challenge possible.

How We Work

We work on two fronts: honing our capabilities as specialists, and building the systems (AI) that maximize them. The rigorous analysis that specialists provide, we take on directly, head-on, and we keep sharpening that core strength through daily practice and the accumulation of knowledge. On top of that, we put in place systems that let AI and outside experts proactively take on work, freeing up human resources to focus on the work only our in-house specialists can do. Continuously acquiring and structuring the latest information, and discerning exactly what to hand off in order to get the maximum output back, is itself work that only specialists can do. Through this combination, we deliver the highest-quality work with the smallest possible team and without dependence on any single individual.
